Abstract: Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) are the emerging technology created by using the principles of Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs). In case of VANET, a wireless network is being created inorder to exchange data between vehicles. VANETs have a great advantage as it provides navigation, road safety and many other roadside services. Here we have discussed about various routing protocols however our main focus is on topology based routing protocol. The topology based routing protocol is subdivided as proactive routing protocol, reactive routing protocol and hybrid based routing protocol. The proactive based routing protocols like DSDV, OLSR and FSR has been taken into consideration and their performance parameters have been analyzed. The reactive based routing protocols like AODV, DSR and TORA has also been discussed and their performance parameters have been calculated. In case of hybrid based routing protocols like ZRP has been analyzed. A brief discussion on the characteristics, properties and uses of these protocols. Additionally, the merits as well as the demerits of the protocols have been mentioned. Even the architecture and characteristics of VANET has also been discussed.
