The main features of contemporary stories are mostly based on middle-class life and their social surroundings. The contemporary female story writers are very successful in depicting the pain and sympathy of middle class women. They have also written stories featuring the financial side of middle-class women. In the contemporary Hindi stories we can find middle-class women characters varying from those who are financially dependent on their family to those who are financially supporting their family with their earnings. The changes brought about by financial in-dependency in the thoughts of middle-class women is also beautifully depicted through the characters of contemporary stories. Thus, through this journal I am trying to highlight some of the changes that have come in the life of middle-class women through financial dependency or financial in-dependency.
