Depression is a serious mental problem among university students. There is very limited information available about mental health of university students in Afghanistan. The main objective of this study was to determine the level of depression among university students. In addition the current study also aimed to investigate whether there is significant mean difference between depression and demographic variables. A cross sectional design was used in this study. The level of depression was assessed by using short version of Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21), along with sociodemogrphic performa. To analyse the collected data, descriptive statistics and independent t-test, analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 21.A total of 531(male = 203, female 528) undergraduate students participated in this study their age range was 18 to 22 years. The prevalence of mild, moderate and severe and extremely severe depression was 7.7%, 20.2%, 9.2% and 6.2% respectively. The overall prevalence of depression was found to be 43.3%. There was a significant mean difference between depression and gender, age, number of family members, place of living and parents’ income. No mean difference was observed for field of study and marital status. Significant number of university students suffering from depression. A comprehensive prevention and intervention plan is required to this issue among university students.
